According to authorities, an Apple Valley couple allegedly used their truck as a weapon in a brutal attack to chase down and run over their victim.

Man chased down by couple in brutal attack

Authorities in California have arrested a man and woman after responding to a disturbing incident that left a victim with severe injuries.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the events unfolded around 1:23 p.m. Monday on Tussing Ranch Road in Apple Valley.

Deputies reported that the victim was walking near the home of the accused, 36-year-old David Schaar and 38-year-old Jacqueline Chapman, when the pair allegedly pursued him in a pickup truck.

“The suspects chased the victim in a pickup truck,” a sheriff’s department statement said.

“The victim was struck and run over several times by the vehicle and became pinned beneath a tire.”

Even as the man lay trapped under the wheel, police say the couple got out of the truck and sprayed him in the face with pepper spray.

Within minutes, both Schaar and Chapman were taken into custody and transported to the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto.

Chapman was booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and was also linked to a separate auto theft case. Her bail was set at $40,000.

Schaar was booked on suspicion of unlawful use of tear gas, with his bail listed at $30,000.

Officer succumbs to injuries after being dragged by a truck

In a separate case in Louisiana, tragedy struck after a veteran police officer died from injuries sustained from an equally brutal attack, when a man allegedly dragged him with a truck for hundreds of feet.

Officials say the driver, 41-year-old Gad Black, is now facing upgraded charges of murder following the death of Baton Rouge Police Sergeant Caleb Eisworth.

Prosecutors allege Black openly bragged about the violent act on social media.

Eisworth, a 23-year member of the force, had been riding his police motorcycle home when he was hit by a Ford F-150 on Greenwell Springs Road near Joor Road around 11 a.m. in June.

“Check Him Out on Joor Rd. Stretched One,” Black allegedly posted on Facebook after the incident.

The crash left Eisworth with two broken legs, a broken arm, and additional serious injuries.

He remained hospitalized for weeks before succumbing to his injuries on Sunday.

Initially charged with attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, Black appeared in court Monday as prosecutors upgraded the case to murder.

He is also facing hate crime charges. His virtual court appearance was held before Commissioner Nicole Robinson.

This is not Black’s first run-in with the law. In 2014, he was accused of leading police on a dangerous high-speed chase with his 9-year-old son in the vehicle.

The pursuit ended when officers deployed a spike strip. After abandoning his disabled car, Black reportedly assaulted both an officer and a police K-9 while attempting to flee.

Despite the severity of the accusations, prosecutors at the time offered a plea deal that dismissed all but one charge, aggravated flight from an officer. He was sentenced to three years’ probation.

Following Eisworth’s death, the Black family issued a statement offering their sympathy.

“On behalf of the Black family, we extend our deepest condolences to the family of Sergeant Caleb Eisworth,” the statement read.

“We are heartbroken to learn of his passing, and our prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”

A mental health evaluation for Black is scheduled for September 3 before Judge Donald Johnson.

“The sanity issue has been raised, not sure if the commission has been selected or picked, but I anticipate that one will be,” District Attorney Hillar Moore explained.

“That will determine his mental condition at the time of the offense and currently to assist counsel.”

East Baton Rouge Sheriff Sid Gautreaux spoke out after Black’s arrest in June, condemning the alleged attack.

“This was a deliberate and cowardly attack on an officer — one of our community’s protectors — and it strikes at the very heart of public safety,” Gautreaux said.

“We are outraged by this senseless act of violence and fully committed to ensuring the individual responsible is held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” he continued.

“I want Sgt. Eisworth’s family, his BRPD family, and all of East Baton Rouge Parish to know that we are standing with and praying for you.”
