A New York man has been accused of murdering his roommate after reportedly confessing to police that he stabbed the older man, dismembered his body, and stuffed parts into a suitcase following an argument about food.

New York man arrested for slaying roommate

Christian Millet, aged 23, was questioned by the NYPD after the torso of his roommate, Edwin Echevarria, 65, was discovered in a suitcase floating in the East River.

According to reports by WABC, the suitcase contained Echevarria’s torso, and a search across the city was launched to locate additional body parts.

The outlet reported that once Echevarria was identified after the harrowing find on February 5, and Millet was brought in for questioning.

During the interview, Millet allegedly admitted to knowing about the incident, mentioning that the two had gotten into a confrontation over food.

Authorities revealed that after acquiring a warrant to search their shared New York City apartment, Millet was detained by officers.

Reports indicate that Millet allegedly confessed during this interrogation, stating that a verbal dispute escalated into physical violence.

He reportedly admitted to stomping on Echevarria’s head, stabbing him 12 to 13 times with an ice pick, and then cutting up the body.

Millet is said to have packed some of the remains into a suitcase and discarded it in the East River.

According to Echevarria’s daughter, Millet was the grandson of her father’s former girlfriend. Her father had allowed Millet to live with him in an attempt to help him out.

However, Matthews alleged that the arrangement eventually became toxic, claiming that relatives told her Millet was physically abusive toward her father.

“Last time when [Millet] left, I told my dad not to let him back in. I didn’t find out until my dad was missing that he had moved back in with my father,” Matthews shared with Gothamist.

She noted that Echevarria had stopped responding to phone calls, raising alarm. Missing person posters, issued after Echevarria’s disappearance, mentioned that he was last seen alive on February 2.

Millet was ultimately taken into police custody on February 12 and has been charged with second-degree murder.

Killer duo dump roommate in Wisconsin river

Separately, in Wisconsin, a woman was sentenced to 15 years in prison after the horrific dismembered remains of her roommate were discovered wrapped in a plastic tarp.

According to reports, financial documents naming her as the beneficiary of the victim’s annuity account were found along with the body.

Tracey Clark, 57, was sentenced on Tuesday in connection to the death of Dennis Schattie, 79. She had entered a no-contest plea to a second-degree reckless homicide charge.

Her boyfriend, Brandon Gaston, 48, is also alleged to have played a role in the gruesome crime and is awaiting trial scheduled for March.

Schattie’s remains were found on April 12, 2022, near a dam in Illinois’ Rock River, about 250 miles away from his home in Altoona, Wisconsin.

Local ABC affiliate WQOW reported that the body parts were wrapped in a tarp, which also held the victim’s dentures—bearing his name for identification.

Authorities stated that Schattie’s body showed signs of having been cut with a saw, with some areas burned.

Investigators determined he had been killed inside the home he shared with Clark and Gaston.

Prosecutors allege that the boyfriend, Gaston, attacked Schattie violently while Clark played a role in disposing of the body.

Clark reportedly told police that Gaston struck Schattie on the head with a hammer, then proceeded to sexually assault her and forced her to assist in moving Schattie’s body into the garage, where it was subsequently dismembered.

She also confessed to throwing Schattie’s severed head into the Rock River during the crime.

Eau Claire County Assistant District Attorney Kelly Ronquist shared horrifying details during Clark’s trial.

“Brandon Gaston used a knife he had retrieved from somewhere in the house and began cutting off [Schattie’s] head and fingers,” she detailed.

Ronquist described Schattie as a kind and caring individual who had shown patience and understanding toward Clark during their time together.

She said, “By participating in this crime, Miss Clark allowed Dennis to be violently murdered in his own home. A place where he should have felt safe and at peace.”

During her sentencing, Clark expressed remorse and apologized, saying, “Denny was a good man and didn’t deserve this. He was kind. And understanding.”
