Caretaker assaults elderly dementia patients
Elsewhere, Joel James Gonzales, 28, entered a guilty plea in August to felony lewd acts on a dependent adult, following a judge declaring a mistrial after the jury deadlocked on one of the charges against him.
Gonzales was employed as a caretaker for dementia and Alzheimer’s patients at the Royal Gardens elder care facility in Camarillo, California.
On October 15, 2020, Gonzales assaulted two patients that resided in the facility. Prosecutors alleged he went after his first victim multiple times, pushed her onto her bed, and attempted to remove her clothing. The patient fought back and and he allegedly stopped trying.
In a subsequent attack, Gonzales led a 90-year-old dementia patient into a storage closet, locked her inside.
He managed to perform “lewd acts on the victim before staff began knocking on the door,” according to prosecutors.
Prosecutors said that the following day, Gonzales crept through a doggy door at a Camarillo residence, “surprising the homeowner.”
The homeowner told him to leave, but he wouldn’t until a Ventura County Sheriff’s deputy arrived on scene.
Gonzales was arrested, but released the same day to a family member. The family’s daughter was hosting another six-year-old girl at the home for a sleep over, when a teenager heard loud noises coming from the room the children were staying in before dawn.
“A teenager in the home was the first to investigate and found Gonzales violently beating and choking the six-year-old victim in her sleeping bag,” prosecutors stated. “The teenager rushed at Gonzales, knocking him off the victim.”
The homeowners restrained Gonzales and called 911. Officers found the victim slipping in and out of consciousness, her face badly bruised and swollen. The girl survived the attack, but suffered brain trauma.
At his initial trial, the jury convicted Gonzales of attempted murder of the child, felony assault with intent to commit rape during a burglary, and misdemeanor assault.
Gonzales initially pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity before changing his plea to guilty at the end of the summer.
He was sentenced to sixteen years and eight months in prison on September 25.
