A Colorado city council member shot a trespassing teenager in the face, though the boy claimed he was only on the property to ask permission to take homecoming photos.
City council member shoots trespassing teen
Brent Metz, 38, was arrested in Conifer, Colorado, after shooting a teenage boy who had been seen with his friend on girlfriend’s property on Tuesday afternoon.
The two boys, aged 15 and 17, drove to a gated community to take pictures for their high school’s homecoming dance.
They reportedly attempted to seek permission to take the photos at a house, but no one appeared to be at home.
It turns out the female resident was home and had contacted the police and her boyfriend, Metz, because she saw two people trespassing on her fenced in property.
According to the sheriff’s department, the teens parked in front of the gate and hopped the fence to talked to the homeowner.
When no one responded, they wandered the property looking for someone to ask for permission to take their photos.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s spokesperson Jacki Kelley mentioned that there was no suggestion from the caller that the boys were attempting a robbery.
“We were responding to an unwanted party on their property,” Kelley noted, but Metz got there first.
After finding nobody home, the teenagers returned to their car to write a note for the homeowner, when Metz arrived and blocked them in with his truck.
“In the process of writing that note, a truck pulled up next to them. An adult male got out, pointed a gun at the windshield of their car and fired the gun,” Kelley commented.
City council member may not have tried to shoot teen
“I am going to die,” the teen who was shot reportedly said. Though according the boy, Metz’s actions, while menacing, did not seem intentionally violent.
In the affidavit, the 17-year-old mentioned that he didn’t believe Metz shot him intentionally.
The report states that the teenager ‘heard the driver (Brent) say ‘oh s**t, my gun went off.”
He also tried to assist the boy he shot, but he was kept back by the younger teen, who questioned, “why he shot his friend.”
Metz was still at the scene when officers arrived, and they discovered the firearm used in the shooting inside of the city council member’s truck.
Metz was arrested and charged with first degree assault, two counts of felony menacing, illegal discharge of a firearm, and two counts of reckless endangerment.
According to an arrest affidavit, Metz refused to speak with the officers on scene and requested a lawyer.
The sheriff’s office said that the boys were not trespassing when Metz allegedly fired at them.
“These kids were no longer on the property by the time the homeowner arrived,” Kelly remarked.
“They were in the car writing a note on a public roadway. So any threat that he thought he may have to deal with was no longer on his property.”
Sheriff’s office won’t pursue trespassing charges
Kelley also indicated that charges against the boys were unlikely.
“There’s nothing about this that appears to be malicious, with any intent to commit crimes when they jumped over that fence and went to contact that homeowner,” she added.
“It doesn’t exist as far as we can tell. So likely not going to be charging these kids with trespassing.”
Metz was booked into the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office on a $5,000 bond, is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
“Our office requested a cash-only bond, but the court granted Metz a PR bond,” stated a spokesperson for District Attorney commented.
Metz was released on Wednesday, while the teenage boy remained in the hospital with serious injuries.
Metz became a Mountain View city council member last year, and will remain in office until 2027.
looking at the booking photo, he appears to be as hot head.
Why didn’t the female answer the door? None of this would have happened.
You do not under any circumstances place your trigger finger on the trigger, unless you are ready to shoot someone or a target. This guy is an idiot for having his finger on the trigger and then stating that the gun just went off.
