A Pennsylvania mother allegedly turned a family vacation into a double murder after spending her husband’s retirement money on a three-week resort stay that was supposed to be an early Christmas treat for their 3-year-old son.

Metallica Rose Harrison, 27, is accused of killing her husband, Charles Harrison, and their son, Tristan, with a knife inside their accommodations at Great Wolf Lodge in the Poconos.

Charles’ relatives say the couple had appeared happy, leaving them struggling to understand what went wrong.

His stepmother, April Thetga, remembered a man whose devotion to his family made the allegations almost impossible to comprehend.

“He was a fantastic husband. She definitely got lucky when it came to him. He just was good. He was a good father. I don’t think I’ve ever even seen him fight,” she recalled in an interview with the New York Post.

Nothing about Thetga’s last conversation with Harrison suggested the family was headed toward disaster. The two had spoken over video shortly before the deaths, and the exchange ended with an ordinary expression of affection.

“She had called and we’re video chatting, and then she says she loved us very much, just like she normally would,” Thetga remembered.

By Monday, that seemingly ordinary family visit had become a homicide investigation. A 911 operator heard Harrison acknowledge that Charles and Tristan were dead while seeking assistance with ending her own life.

“My husband and son are already gone in the bed in the living room. They’re already gone, I’m sorry,” Harrison allegedly told the dispatcher.

Charles had sustained multiple injuries to his chest from a knife, while Tristan had suffered a single wound in the same area. Harrison was also injured, apparently by her own hand, according to an affidavit obtained by WNEP 16.

The bathroom contained two knives, neither of which Great Wolf Lodge personnel recognized as belonging to the resort. Pocono Township investigators recovered the larger, butcher-style blade from the floor, with a smaller knife located in the sink.

Beyond the weapons, the inventory of the room included several medicine bottles. Police also collected containers holding a substance they believed might be blood.

The family’s time at Great Wolf Lodge was nearing its third week when police arrived. Although their original September 21 reservation had been scheduled to end October 5, the Harrisons had secured an extension allowing them to stay until Tuesday.

Charles’ retirement savings had helped cover the getaway, a decision that puzzled his relatives without convincing them that the marriage was in trouble. Thetga told the New York Post that the family had no control over how the couple used the account.

“It was definitely odd, but they’d taken their 401(k) out … There was nothing we could do about that,” she explained.

Exactly how much of Charles’ retirement money was committed remained unspecified. Thetga also could not establish whether the couple had accessed the funds through a loan or an outright withdrawal.

Harrison’s remarks during her trip to the hospital introduced another disturbing element to the investigation.

Emergency medical workers heard her speak about a future she had imagined with her husband and child, according to the affidavit.

“Every day I work so hard. To be the best person, the best mother, the best wife,” she allegedly told the crew.

“It wasn’t supposed to end like this. I was supposed to have my happy family. That’s what I envisioned since I was a child.”

Her survival was apparently not the outcome she had intended. During the ambulance ride, Harrison told paramedics she was “not supposed to be here.”

Her questions then turned to the possibility of another suicide attempt. Investigators documented her asking medical personnel about the depth of a vein in her wrist and expressing disappointment that her blood had coagulated despite taking medication intended to prevent clotting.

Harrison later declined to answer detectives’ questions following her arrest. Her explanation was brief, with WNEP 16 citing the affidavit for her declaration that she was “suicidal, not stupid.”

For Thetga, neither the police account nor the family’s memories offered an answer about why Charles and Tristan had been killed.

“Absolutely it was a loving family. We’re just as shocked as everybody else. We’re not evil people. We want answers. They were always happy,” she told the New York Post.

Another mother faces accusations of attacking her family with a knife in Texas, although her husband and two children survived their injuries.

In Northlake, 37-year-old Holly Leeann Flores is accused of stabbing her husband, Justin Hommel, 34, and injuring their 3-year-old daughter and 10-month-old son earlier this month.

Months before Flores’ arrest, Northlake officers had made five visits to the couple’s residence for welfare checks beginning in March, KXAS-TV reported.

Hommel had also voiced worries about his wife’s conduct, telling investigators she was experiencing postpartum depression, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by WFAA-TV.

On the morning of the attack, cries from the children’s bedroom awakened Hommel. He went to investigate, only to encounter Flores at the door with a knife, according to his account to investigators.

She allegedly attacked him as he tried to reach the children. Hommel eventually gained control of the blade, but not before suffering a wound to his head. Bite marks on his arm provided additional evidence of a physical struggle.

Northlake Police Chief Robert Crawford reviewed the emergency call and recounted the father’s predicament to KXAS.

“He was trying to get to the children, and the children were in another room, and she was actively trying to stab him, so he had to retreat outside,” Crawford explained.

The attack prompted a 911 call from Hommel around 4:20 a.m., sending police to Daylily Drive’s 1200 block. Inside the home, the couple’s two young children had been stabbed in the chest.

Both youngsters were transported to a Fort Worth hospital. Hommel survived his injuries as well, and all three were eventually discharged.

After receiving care at a Denton medical facility, Flores was released to law enforcement and transferred to the Denton County Jail.

She now faces two counts of attempted capital murder and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

When officers attempted to communicate with her, Crawford described her response as “More of a stare — didn’t really say a whole lot.”

The charges left Flores in custody, with her jail information providing no indication of when she would appear in court or whether bond had been set.

Following their release from the hospital, the children were placed with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, WFAA reported.
