A Florida pickleball match allegedly ended with a man bleeding from the head and a mother hauled off to jail after police said she used her paddle as a weapon during a court-side argument.

The May 31 clash in St. Augustine put 47-year-old Michele Bannister under felony scrutiny after a routine ball dispute allegedly turned into a paddle attack.

The match had already ended when the confrontation shifted toward Bannister’s son, according to local reporting.

After the man addressed Bannister’s son, deputies say the mother moved into the confrontation herself.

The argument allegedly ended with Bannister swinging the paddle into the man’s head more than once. The man was left with facial cuts and heavy bleeding.

Bannister allegedly framed the incident as self-defense, though the report said witnesses and the victim disputed that her son faced danger.

The pickleball player, reportedly an orthopedic nurse, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Deputies also accused her of twice providing a fake name, leading to a separate false-identification charge.

A well-known local pickleball ambassador happened to be nearby when the paddle attack unfolded.

Pam Hatch, known as “Pickleball Pam” and identified as the North Florida Ambassador for USA Pickleball, told Action News JAX she saw the aftermath up close.

“She probably got in six good whacks with the side of the paddle. She was being torn off of him as well. She was upset. Something really did set her off,” Hatch said.

The scene after the alleged attack was messy, she recalled.

“There was blood kind of all over the place. I was helping the victim ring out the towel because it was a bloody mess.”

The St. Augustine case was not the only recent pickleball dispute to spill into criminal charges.

A Utah pickleball outing also ended in charges after a woman accused 28-year-old Nephi Kata of attacking her over her clothing.

The case began June 4, when police were sent to Vernon Worthen Park in St. George for a reported sex offense.

The woman said the trouble started while she and Kata were on the pickleball court.

Court documents said Kata slapped her twice on the thigh, leaving red marks, after allegedly objecting to her “revealing clothing.”

The woman said the encounter became more frightening when she tried to leave the park.

Investigators allege he stopped her from leaving by grabbing her hair, yanking her head back and slapping her butt.

Afterward, authorities said, Kata texted the woman an apology.

Kata was booked into Washington County Jail on misdemeanor sexual battery and assault counts.

In Pennsylvania, another man’s pickleball frustration allegedly turned into park vandalism after an injury he said ruined his summer.

Pocono Township police say Saif Kaleem, 31, took out his frustration on court nets after getting hurt at Mountain View Park.

Kaleem, of Tannersville, is facing criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and trespassing charges.

At TLC Park, surveillance allegedly caught the net damage on May 12 and a white Hyundai Tucson leaving afterward.

Mountain View Park was hit after hours two days later, with police saying the same vehicle appeared there.

One image reviewed by police showed the suspect navigating the park on crutches.

After comparing the footage to Kaleem, investigators went to his home for an interview.

During that interview, police say he acknowledged a recent pickleball injury at Mountain View Park, though they did not specify what it was.

He later allegedly admitted damaging one pickleball net at TLC Park, three more at Mountain View Park and a tennis net there too.

Police said he blamed the vandalism on his “summer being ruined.”

A Port Orange country club match on Super Bowl Sunday became another criminal case after deputies say a married couple clashed with their opponents.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office reached the club around 11:10 a.m. Feb. 8 after a reported pickleball-court brawl.

Initial reports suggested the fight may have drawn as many as 20 people.

Three people with injuries later pointed deputies toward the other team.

Anthony Sapienza, 63, was accused of using a paddle during the fight, leaving another player with a serious eye injury. His wife, 51-year-old Julianne Sapienza, was also arrested.

The couple had been playing against another husband and wife when tensions escalated.

Investigators traced the blowup to an insult Anthony allegedly aimed at the other player’s wife.

According to the police affidavit, both sides exchanged insults before Anthony allegedly shouted, “Your wife is a c***!”

When the woman’s husband confronted him, Sapienza allegedly attacked.

Police said Sapienza “then approached him and punched him on the left side of the face and struck him with a pickleball paddle, causing significant bleeding.” Medics treated the man for a laceration above his eye.

Anthony was also accused of shoving the woman down as she tried to reach her husband.

A 70-year-old who tried to intervene also reported being punched, with his nose bleeding heavily afterward.

The Sapienzas allegedly left the club before deputies got there, but officers later tracked them down.

The game reportedly soured over a “kitchen” dispute, referring to the no-volley area near the net.

Arrest records list Julianne on a felony battery charge involving a person 65 or older, while Anthony faces two such counts plus aggravated battery causing bodily harm. Both were released on bonds totaling nearly $10,000.
