A teenage barrel racer was arrested after three horses were allegedly stabbed inside a barn at a major Las Vegas competition, leaving stunned competitors tending to wounded animals instead of celebrating their runs.
Police responded just after 2 a.m. Saturday to a barn near the South Point Hotel Casino & Spa after receiving a report that a horse had been injured, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
When officers arrived, they found three horses that had “been intentionally injured with a sharp object.”
The department’s Animal Cruelty Section was called to the barn, where detectives later identified a 17-year-old girl as a possible suspect.
Investigators said the teenager had access to the barn where the horses were housed and think “she may have used a knife to inflict multiple injuries to the horses.”
The animals survived, but their injuries kept them from competing in the 2026 National Barrel Horse Association Professional’s Choice Las Vegas Super Show at the South Point Arena and Equestrian Center.
Police said the teenager was later found at a nearby hotel and taken into custody.

She was taken to Clark County Juvenile Hall and slammed with charges that included 12 counts of willful or malicious killing, maiming or torturing an animal, along with three counts of felony malicious destruction of private property valued at more than $5,000.
Authorities have not publicly identified her because of her age.
The National Barrel Horse Association described the attack as an isolated incident involving “the mistreatment of a limited number of equine athletes by an event competitor.”
“This situation was addressed immediately in coordination with the National Barrel Horse Association, the South Point Hotel and Security, Metro Police, and all appropriate parties,” the organization said in a statement.
“The individual involved has been removed and placed in the care of authorities, and there is no ongoing threat of any kind.”
The arrests did little to ease the shock inside the barrel racing community.
One competitor praised the response from South Point and NBHA while acknowledging the scene was unlike anything participants expected to confront during the weekend event.
“I will give massive points to South Point and NBHA for the way they handled it,” the competitor commented.

“They have always been great at handling things. Nobody could have expected something like this. There were police and security everywhere. They handled it very well.”
Another competing family said their own horses were stabled just rows away from one of the attacked animals.
The family was not in the barn when the incident happened, and the mother said she rushed back after learning what occurred.
“It was very shocking. I don’t think anybody has ever been through something like this before,” she said.
“We were waking up, and I rushed down here to make sure my horses were not involved.”
The competition continued through the weekend, but the atmosphere had changed.
“It carried on, it still carried on the same way. Sunday was the same way,” the mother said.
“Hard to celebrate any victories when you have fellow competitors whose equine athletes were terribly attacked. It’s hard to celebrate any type of exciting win when you are coming off an event like that. Even though it wasn’t to you, we are a big family, we are supposed to be.”
The allegation also rattled riders who said they had interacted with the accused teenager before the show.
Barrel racer Lora Nichols said she was disturbed to realize the teen accused in the attack was the same girl who had previously contacted her about borrowing a horse.
“About a month ago, I got a message from a girl asking if I had a horse she could run,” Nichols said. “I said no, and she kept asking about each of my specific horses.”
After the arrest, Nichols checked whether the suspect was the same person.
“This weekend I looked to see if it was the same girl they arrested. It was! It makes my skin crawl to realize she was stalking my horses, too. It could have been me just as easily.”
The three affected competitors were later identified as Arielle Phillips, Keira Weisbart and Hailey Krahenbuhl, whose horses Detail, Rocket and Sully were injured.
Phillips wrote on Facebook that she knew the teenager before the attack and claimed the girl had followed her online for a long time while obsessing over her horse Detail.
According to Phillips, the teen came by Detail’s stall twice around 11 p.m. Friday while asking “weird questions,” despite being boarded in a different barn.
Phillips said she left Detail’s stall at 12:02 a.m. Two minutes later, she claimed, the teen entered the barn.
“This psychopath went in and brutally stabbed [Detail] 6 times,” Phillips wrote.
Phillips said the mare panicked after the attack and broke loose through the barn aisles while bleeding heavily.
She claimed the teenager later fabricated a story that she found Detail with the stall open and that the horse had cut herself.
Phillips said she immediately knew something was wrong when Detail recoiled from her touch.
“This mare who loves and trusts me with her life, jumped away in fear as I reached my hand out. My blood boiled in that moment. This was a human attack,” Phillips wrote.
She said a veterinarian later confirmed the wounds were consistent with stabbing.
“The vet confirmed these were perfect stab wounds, there was no way it was anything else,” Phillips wrote.
The competitor said Detail is now traumatized. “This is my best friend. An innocent sweet horse, who only knows how to give me her ALL was brutally tortured for no reason,” Phillips said.
Weisbart said her horse Rocket had been stabbed three times and had additional attempted stab marks around his body.
“He is okay and stitched up and will make a full recovery… I pray for every other horse involved. The person who did this disgusting thing is in custody. Thank you for all the prayers and love I have received,” Weisbart wrote.
Krahenbuhl also posted that Sully had been stabbed more than once by the suspect.
“Sully was stabbed multiple times last night. I have no words, he is stitched up and in recovery. Thank you to everyone who has reached out, prayers are appreciated,” she wrote.
A GoFundMe created to help cover veterinary bills described the wounded horses as more than competition animals.
“These horses are more than just animals. They are partners, family, and a huge part of their lives. What happened was heartbreaking and completely undeserved.”
