A Kentucky church was terrorized on Sunday when a man burst in searching for his ex and opened fire, killing two women and injuring multiple others before being fatally shot by police.
Kentucky church shooter was hunting down the mother of his children
The gunman, identified by witnesses as Guy House, stormed into the basement of Richmond Road Baptist Church in Lexington during what began as a peaceful afternoon among congregants.
According to those present, the chaos began when House confronted two women preparing lunch, 72-year-old Beverly Gumm and her daughter Star Rutherford, and demanded to know the whereabouts of one of Rutherford’s sisters, the mother of House’s children.
“He asked for my sister, and we told him she wasn’t there,” Rutherford said in an interview with the Lexington Herald-Leader.
“Then he said, ‘Well someone is gonna have to die then.’ And that’s when he opened fire.”
Rutherford said Gumm dodged the first shot but was hit in the chest by a second round, dying instantly in the basement of the church she had attended for years.
The carnage continued outside, where House allegedly gunned down Rutherford’s other sister, 32-year-old Christina Combs, in cold blood.

Police said House also injured two other people during the rampage, Gumm’s husband, Jerry Gumm, who is the church’s longtime pastor, and Combs’ husband, Randy Combs.
Both men were rushed to the University of Kentucky hospital, where they remained in critical condition as of Sunday night.
Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers confirmed that three officers responded to the scene and discharged their weapons, fatally striking House.
“Sometimes things happen, and we just don’t have a reason why,” Weathers said at a press conference.
Kentucky church suspect shot state trooper prior to incident
Authorities said the gunman had already been in a violent altercation earlier that morning.
Just after 10:40 a.m., House’s vehicle was flagged by a license plate reader near Blue Grass Airport.
A Kentucky State Trooper attempted to pull him over on Terminal Drive, but House allegedly opened fire on the trooper and then fled the scene.
After the highway shooting, House reportedly carjacked another vehicle and made the 16-mile trip to the church, where his deadly assault would unfold in front of horrified witnesses.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear addressed the tragedy on social media, noting the multiple incidents tied to a single suspect.
“Please pray for everyone affected by these senseless acts of violence, and let’s give thanks for the swift response by the Lexington Police Department and Kentucky State Police,” Beshear wrote in a post to X.
House had a known history of legal troubles. According to a report, the 38-year-old had been wanted since 2022 for charges including wanton endangerment of a police officer, vehicle theft, evading police, and illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Different ex-girlfriend file restraining order against House
One of House’s former girlfriends recently filed a restraining order against him, stating she feared for her safety due to his erratic behavior.
That protective order had not yet been served at the time of the shooting.
In her statement to the Herald-Leader, the ex-girlfriend described House as increasingly unstable.
She said he had fallen back into drug use and had been living on disability following a previous injury.
She alleged he had begun to control her movements, checking her phone, following her to work, and showing up uninvited at public places.
On July 4, she reportedly ended the relationship. That same day, she claims House broke into her home, stole her car, and took two firearms.
She called police and requested an emergency protective order. A hearing had been set for July 14—just one day after the shooting.
The woman said she wasn’t sure if House used one of her stolen guns in Sunday’s attack, but authorities confirmed the weapon was in their custody.
She told the paper she believed House had issues with both her and another ex who prevented him from seeing his daughter.
Due to her fear of House, she had left her home on Sunday morning to stay with relatives in Winchester.
She later learned what had happened through news reports and phone calls.
“I feel sad, but I also feel free,” she said Monday. “I was able to sleep and shower in the house by myself last night. But my heart goes out to all of them, and I’m just so sorry.”
Meanwhile, Rutherford told the Herald-Leader she was by her mother’s side in her final moments. “I held her as she died,” she said.
Beverly Gumm, described as a dedicated mother of eight, was a longtime fixture in the Richmond Road Baptist Church community.
Her daughter said she was a “faithful member of the church who loved God.”
Combs, who was also killed in the Kentucky church shooting, was a mother of five, including a six-month-old baby.
According to her family, she was on track to graduate from nursing school in December.
