A Maryland homeowner shot three masked men who allegedly confronted him with a handgun in his driveway on Halloween night, killing one and wounding the other two, Baltimore County police said.

The resident told investigators he was sitting outside his Cockeysville home at approximately 10:40 p.m. when the armed group approached and threatened him. He drew his own firearm and shot at the men, who fled before he called 911.

Officers searching nearby discovered 20-year-old Amon Walker dead a short distance from the property. The other two men, both adults, were located after seeking treatment at local hospitals, according to police.

Investigators recovered a loaded handgun believed to have belonged to the group. Baltimore County police described the men as wearing masks; WBAL-TV reported that the coverings were Halloween-style masks.

The department’s Homicide Unit is investigating the circumstances. Police said there was no active threat to the community, but their account of the initial confrontation came from the resident, and the released information did not establish the men’s intentions beyond the threats he reported.

Halloween celebrations also ended in gunfire in Bloomington, Illinois, where a 19-year-old college cheerleader was killed while visiting her best friend near Illinois Wesleyan University.

Giana Dettloff, a Carol Stream resident attending North Central College in Naperville, was at a house party early November 1 when shots rang out around 1:30 a.m. Bloomington police said approximately 150 to 200 people had gathered in a shared backyard between houses.

An officer nearby reported hearing about 10 shots. Dettloff suffered multiple wounds to her chest and pelvis and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police reported up to eight people injured, ranging from 16 to 22 years old, and said injured partygoers were transported to hospitals. The available figures do not specify whether that total includes Dettloff.

Investigators appealed to residents for home-security recordings, cellphone footage, photographs and dashcam video that might show what happened. Police had not identified a suspected shooter or established a motive in the account provided.

A different Halloween-night shooting in Davie, Florida, left a 16-year-old boy hospitalized after a prank involving a neighbor’s front door. His family says the homeowner chased the boy and his friends before opening fire.

The teenager was with a group in the Shenandoah neighborhood around 11 p.m., according to his stepfather, who described the prank as repeated door-kicking followed by running away.

He told NBC6 South Florida that the resident came outside, pursued the teenagers down the street and fired twice, striking the boy twice in one arm.

That account came from the family; the provided reporting did not include a police reconstruction confirming how the shooting unfolded. The teen’s mother said he underwent major surgery in which doctors opened his arm, although the full extent of the injuries was not specified.

“They need to find this guy, and they know who they are,” she told NBC6, questioning why the shooter had not been arrested. “They know. So why he’s not being arrested?”

The boy’s stepfather rejected the suggestion that the resident was defending his property, arguing that he should have contacted police and filed a report instead. No arrest had been announced, and authorities had not publicly identified the homeowner.

The stepfather said the homeowner should have called the police department and made a report rather than pursuing the teenagers.

In California, police made an arrest following a shooting inside a Spirit Halloween store that killed Constance Hages, 31, and wounded six others at Fairfield’s Solano Town Center. The new development was the identification of a 17-year-old suspect who had previously been arrested in a separate shooting.

Monte Smith was arrested November 2 after investigators reviewed surveillance video from the store, where police said the attacker fled within minutes as officers arrived. A school resource officer examining the footage recognized Smith as a former student and alerted detectives.

That identification helped police narrow their search within hours of the initial 911 call. Detectives eventually found Smith at a home in nearby Suisun City. The reporting described Hages as a pregnant mother of four.

Fairfield police said Smith had been arrested in connection with gunfire in a high school parking lot after school hours in 2025. The department reported that he received a sentence and was later released, without giving the full details of that case.

The Solano County District Attorney’s Office charged Smith with two counts of murder and asked that he be tried as an adult. The announcement did not explain the basis for the second murder count.

Prosecutors also alleged that Smith had a prior violent-offense conviction qualifying as a strike, but did not identify the underlying offense. They asked that he remain in custody, citing the new charges, his criminal history and concerns about public safety.

“Due to the seriousness of these crimes, the minor’s criminal record, and the threat to public safety, the people will argue that Smith remain detained,” the district attorney’s office stated.

Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall criticized the handling of youth violence following the arrest. “It’s time for change in California,” Marshall told KTVU. “I don’t know how many more people have to die at the hands of youth. Hopefully we’ve had plenty enough.”
