A State Department Foreign Service Officer allegedly launched a knife attack during a highway road rage incident in Virginia, killing one woman, a dog and wounding three others before being shot by a state trooper.
The State Department confirmed the suspect worked as a Foreign Service Officer after Virginia State Police identified him as 32-year-old Jared Llamado of McLean.
“We are aware of the tragic incident that involved a Foreign Service Officer and occurred on Sunday, March 1, in Fairfax County, Virginia,” a department spokesperson said in a statement. “We extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragedy.”
The spokesperson declined to release further details and cited the ongoing investigation led by Virginia State Police.
State police said the violence unfolded around 1:20 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 495 southbound in Fairfax County, roughly 30 minutes from Washington, D.C.
Investigators reported that a crash preceded the stabbing and described the confrontation as a road rage incident. Authorities stated the attack is not believed to be related to terrorism.
Police allege Llamado stabbed four women identified as Michelle Adams, 39; Dana Bonnell, 36; Mary C. Flood, 37; and Heather Miller, 40. Adams died from her injuries. A dog was also killed during the attack.
A Virginia State Police trooper had been dispatched in the early afternoon for a reported road rage situation.
“A Virginia State Police trooper was called to the scene at approximately 1:17 p.m. for a reported road rage incident. When the trooper arrived on scene, he was confronted by a male suspect carrying a knife,” state police wrote.
“The trooper then shot the suspect in self-defense. The suspect, Jared Llamado, 32, of McLean, Va., was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Llamado later succumbed to those injuries. The trooper was not injured.”
Officials said Llamado approached the responding trooper while armed with a knife, prompting the shooting. The trooper was not harmed. Llamado died at a local hospital.

The Virginia investigation follows other recent deadly road rage cases in different states.
In Texas last month, authorities charged 23-year-old Dayton Alexander Morgan with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 29-year-old Marine Trevor Julian.
Tyler police responded to multiple 911 calls around 5 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the intersection of Grande Boulevard and Paluxy Drive.
Investigators said Morgan was driving a truck behind a white Tesla occupied by Julian, his wife and their three children.
Police reported that Morgan claimed the Tesla stopped abruptly at a red light, leaving his truck closer than he preferred.
Julian exited the Tesla and approached Morgan’s truck, and the two men exchanged words.
Morgan told investigators he grabbed a handgun from his center console, racked the slide and fired through his window when Julian came toward the driver’s side door.
Authorities noted that Morgan admitted Julian did not make verbal threats and did not appear to have a gun.
Detectives concluded that Morgan’s claim of self-defense was not supported by the evidence.
In Florida, another driver now faces seven felony charges after deputies say he pulled a handgun during a road rage confrontation.
Blackie Alvarez, 33, of Bonifay, was arrested after deputies responded around 1 p.m. on Feb. 8 to reports of a man pointing a firearm at motorists along U.S. 331 in DeFuniak Springs.
Investigators said Alvarez sped up behind victims, honked repeatedly and then passed them before stopping abruptly in front of their vehicle.
Deputies allege Alvarez drew a handgun and pointed it at the occupants.
When deputies located the white Ford Explorer, Alvarez exited and placed a black handgun on top of the vehicle.
Authorities also found two metal knuckles in his pockets. Alvarez refused to speak with investigators, according to deputies.
He was charged with two counts of false imprisonment, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, two counts of unlawful carry of a concealed weapon and driving without a license.
Officials also noted Alvarez had an outstanding warrant in Bay County for failure to pay child support.
He remains in custody on a $235,000 bond as the case moves through the court system.
Elsewhere, an Illinois man was arrested after police say he brutally beat a 73-year-old dementia patient during a road rage clash that left the victim with a broken jaw, broken nose and shattered teeth.
D’Angelo Groce, 41, faces two counts of aggravated battery following the late November attack in a Chicago suburb.
Joseph and his wife Deborah were attempting to merge into a right-turn lane near a gas station when a truck shot out and cut them off, according to reports. Deborah said the driver sped up and struck their vehicle as she tried to move over.
“When I tried to get over, he sped up and plowed into me,” Deborah recalled. She exited the car and confronted the driver. “What the hell, dude?” she said she asked.
Deborah said Groce shoved her to the ground, sending her glasses and phone flying into the street. Joseph, who was diagnosed with dementia three years ago, stepped out to help his wife.
Police allege Groce punched the 73-year-old and knocked him to the pavement. Deborah described hearing Groce taunt her husband, “Get up again, mf–er, and I’m going to finish you,” as Joseph struggled.
“I was so upset,” she said. “I was crying. I was saying, ‘Stop it. Stop hitting him!'”
Witnesses called police and Groce was arrested. Joseph suffered a broken nose, broken jaw, two broken teeth and scrapes on both hands. “I thought he was going to kill him,” Deborah said.
The financial toll added to the trauma. “We have no dental insurance,” she said. “It’s like $7,000 we had to pay to get his surgery done.” Car repairs topped $2,000.
Records show Groce has prior convictions for burglary in 2010, domestic violence in 2012 and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault with a motor vehicle in 2020.

With this guys record, he is still on the street. The courts are responsible for the daltercation and should have to pay for the damage. Groce should NEVER be out again.
