An HIV-positive man was arrested for turning his own blood into a weapon during a shocking assault at a Raleigh hospital, allegedly spraying two medical workers in the face with his infectious blood.
Authorities say 25-year-old Kameron Gilchrist attacked the staff members while receiving treatment for a diabetic condition at UNC Rex Hospital.
According to an arrest warrant, Gilchrist intentionally removed his IV line and aimed the blood at the victims’ eyes during the March incident.
“He aimed his HIV positive blood at the victims’ eyes,” the warrant reads, describing how both employees were struck in the face.
Investigators said the attack led to irritation and potential exposure to HIV, though officials have not said whether either worker contracted the virus.
The incident allegedly took place as Gilchrist was undergoing routine diabetic care.
Police said the patient suddenly tore out his IV line and began spraying his blood toward the staff members, deliberately targeting their faces.
The liquid entered both workers’ eyes, leaving them in fear for their health and uncertain about their long-term prognosis.
Gilchrist, who has been charged with two felony counts of assault on emergency personnel, was not immediately taken into custody because he required both medical and psychiatric treatment, local NBC affiliate WRAL reported.
Authorities said the attack rattled hospital staff and prompted increased security precautions.
Officials at UNC Rex Hospital said that while they could not discuss details of the case, violence against healthcare workers has been rising across the country.
In a statement, hospital representatives said ensuring the safety of staff remains a top priority and that they are working closely with law enforcement.
Gilchrist was eventually arrested in September and booked into jail on a $25,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on December 8.

Authorities say 44-year-old Crystal Scott created a convincing facade of professionalism to deceive parents, pharmacies, and schools.
Police said Scott operated without any medical license, allegedly setting up fake businesses, conducting phony consultations, and issuing forged medical orders.
According to CBS affiliate KLAS, she provided insulin and other controlled substances to at least a dozen children under false pretenses.
Investigators claim Scott went so far as to impersonate two licensed physicians and use a nurse’s license number belonging to an unsuspecting hospital employee.
More than 20 prescriptions were allegedly written using forged signatures.
“She put a lot of people at risk, and some of them don’t even know,” said one parent who spoke to reporters anonymously.
The parent explained that Scott often presented herself as a helpful resource for families facing long wait times for pediatric specialists.
The elaborate deception began to unravel when a chief nurse at the Clark County School District noticed irregularities in a student’s insulin authorization form.
The physician listed on the order denied ever signing or authorizing the treatment, telling investigators he did not even treat pediatric patients.
Police traced the forged paperwork back to Scott, who was later found in possession of insulin pumps, injectable medications, and blank lab orders bearing stolen names.
Scott now faces more than 70 criminal charges, including forgery, practicing nursing without a license, child abuse and neglect, and furnishing dangerous drugs to minors.
In another case of healthcare impersonation, a Florida woman allegedly treated thousands of patients without a valid license while employed at a major hospital.
Authorities say 29-year-old Autumn Bardisa was arrested in August and charged with practicing a healthcare profession without a license and fraudulent use of personal identification information.
Detectives with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office said Bardisa worked at AdventHealth Palm Coast Parkway Hospital under false pretenses, posing as a registered nurse using someone else’s credentials.
The hospital later told investigators that Bardisa had submitted forged documentation to secure her position as an advanced nurse technician.
Officials said Bardisa claimed she had recently married and used that as an explanation for discrepancies in her credentials.
However, she never produced a marriage license when asked to verify the claim.
According to investigators, Bardisa treated more than 4,400 patients between June 2024 and January 2025.
Bardisa was booked into the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility and remains held on a $70,000 bond as authorities continue to review patient records to determine the extent of her actions.

Gilchrist and Bardisa should both be released from custoday and placed on a raft 400 miles off shore with their hands locked behind them . When they reach shore again they can admit what they did was wrong.
