A Louisiana man targeted a law enforcement officer in what authorities have condemned as a premeditated and malicious attack.
Louisiana man runs down off duty cop
On Monday, Sgt. Caleb Eisworth, a 23-year veteran of the force, was critically injured when a truck rammed into his patrol motorcycle as he was heading home after his shift.
Authorities identified the alleged assailant as Gad Black, 41, who is accused of driving his Ford F-150 into Eisworth near Greenwell Springs Road and Joor Road just after 11 a.m.
Black reportedly struck Eisworth, knocked the officer off his motorcycle, and proceeded to drag him approximately 500 feet.
The officer sustained severe injuries, including two broken legs and a fractured arm, and remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Adding to the chilling nature of the crime, investigators discovered that Black had allegedly boasted about the incident on social media.
He reportedly posted on Facebook, “Check Him Out on Joor Rd. Stretched One.”
The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office did not mince words about the nature of the assault.
Sheriff blast Louisiana man for “cowardly attack”
Sheriff Sid Gautreaux described the attack as “deliberate and cowardly,” pointing out its serious impact not only on Sgt. Eisworth and his family but also on the community as a whole.
“This was a deliberate and cowardly attack on an officer—one of our community’s protectors—and it strikes at the very heart of public safety,” Gautreaux stated.
Authorities have charged Black with attempted first-degree murder of a police officer. Additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.
Gautreaux also acknowledged the officer’s family and colleagues, assuring the community that law enforcement is wholly committed to ensuring accountability for this act of violence.
“We are outraged by this senseless act of violence and fully committed to ensuring the individual responsible is held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” he said.
This isn’t Black’s first encounter with the law. Back in 2014, he led law enforcement on a dangerous vehicle pursuit, endangering lives—including that of his 9-year-old son, who was a passenger in the car.
The high-speed chase ended when police deployed spike strips to stop his vehicle.
Black fled on foot but assaulted both an officer and a K9 service dog during his attempted escape.
Although he faced multiple charges, a plea deal reduced his conviction to aggravated flight from an officer, for which he received only three years of probation.
San Francisco heir goes on violent rampage
Meanwhile, on the West Coast, a high-profile case involving a prominent business heir made headlines.
Austin Hills, the 45-year-old scion of the Hills Bros. Coffee fortune, was arrested after an alleged spree of road rage incidents on Thursday morning in San Francisco.
Hills is accused of using his Land Rover as a weapon, targeting multiple vehicles across the city.
The shocking events reportedly began when Hills tailgated a Tesla driven by a security guard, who was parked and taking a break during a night shift.
The Tesla driver alleged that Hills intentionally attempted to rear-end his car, turning off his headlights before ramming into the vehicle.
The violence escalated as Hills pursued the Tesla into a vehicle warehouse parking lot.
There, he allegedly shifted his attention to another driver in a Kia. Witnesses claim Hills rammed into the occupied Kia not once, but three times.
When officers located Hills on a nearby street, they reported an erratic and dangerous high-speed pursuit on Interstate 680.
Hills allegedly turned off his headlights again and drove recklessly to evade capture, forcing law enforcement to terminate the chase due to safety concerns.
Hills was eventually arrested later that morning when he turned himself in at the Napa Police Department.
Authorities searched Hills’ vehicle after the arrest and uncovered some concerning items, including a pressure cooker, a gas mask, ammunition, and a drone.
These discoveries have raised additional questions about the intent behind his actions.
According to officials, Hills was unapologetic. Court records detail his conflicting explanations, ranging from blaming the Tesla for erratic driving to claiming the Kia blocked him in.
He also reportedly claimed that stress had caused memory loss regarding his dangerous behavior.
Prosecutors revealed further information on Hills’ lengthy criminal history, which includes 11 prior cases in San Francisco.
His record includes assault with a deadly weapon, arson, and weapons charges, amongst others.
They noted that, although his most recent case was referred to mental health authorities earlier this year, Hills exhibited “no remorse” for the events on Thursday.
Hills is currently being held in the Santa Rita Jail and faces charges of evading police and assault with a deadly weapon.
Officials did not release additional details on whether any connection exists between him and the victims targeted during his alleged rampage.
