Canadian man arrested for daughter’s death

Elsewhere, police took a Canadian man into custody after his 9-year-old daughter’s body was discovered in a pond in upstate New York.

Luciano Frattolin, 45, initially told police that his daughter had been abducted on Saturday night from Lake George.

The pair, who reside in Montreal, were on a U.S. vacation since July 11, that included stops in Connecticut, New York City and Lake George.

They were supposed to be headed back to Canada the next day, so Melina could reunite with her mother, who had custody, but had allowed Frattolin to take her on vacation.

Melina was last seen alive at a restaurant in Saratoga Springs around 5:30 p.m. Saturday with her father, according to New York State Police Capt. Robert McConnell.

Police said she spoke on the phone to her mother a final time before her death and “did not indicate she was under any duress.”

An Amber Alert went into affect on Sunday, about four hours after she was reported missing to police.

State forest rangers discovered Melina’s body in a pond near Ticonderoga, which was around 30 miles from where her father reported her missing.

“Sometime after Melina’s phone call with her mother and before Frattolin’s 911 call, he allegedly murdered Melina and left her body in a remote area where she was later discovered by law enforcement,” McConnell said.

The Amber alert was cancelled later that afternoon after her body was found in the water. Her cause of death is still pending.

Frattolin immediately became a suspect after police poked holes in his story.

McConnell said that the suspect initially reported that he pulled over at an exit in Lake George to relieve himself.

At first, he told police that he went into the woods to urinate and returned to find that Melina had disappeared from the vehicle.

The then told police that he saw a “suspicious white van” fleeing the scene, but the details eventually changed.

“During a subsequent interview, he then reports two unknown males forced her into a white van,” McConnell explained. “That lead was thoroughly investigated and disproven.”

Frattolin is charged with second-degree murder and concealment of a human corpse.
