USPS driver accused of trying to mow down a 10-year-old on a scooter is now facing felony charges after police say a routine delivery spiraled into a terrifying neighborhood confrontation.

Florida Highway Patrol investigators say the incident unfolded Dec. 27 in an Escambia County neighborhood when a postal worker allegedly mistook a child’s good deed for theft and responded with violence instead of words.

According to officials, a 10-year-old boy noticed a package had been mistakenly dropped off at his family’s home and decided to return it to the correct address using his electric scooter.

Police reports state the child placed the package on the scooter and began riding along Kingfisher Way, unaware that the USPS driver who made the delivery was watching.

That driver, identified by authorities as 41-year-old William White Jr., allegedly believed the child was stealing mail and chose to intervene behind the wheel of his postal truck.

“This isn’t just a simple, ‘Oops,’ crash with a 10-year-old in the road,” Florida Highway Patrol Capt. Jason King told WEAR. “This is an intentional act by a United States postal worker.”

Investigators say White “purposely” drove his USPS vehicle directly toward the child and ran over the scooter, narrowly missing the boy as he scrambled out of the way.

Police say the child avoided being struck by diving into a nearby yard, but still injured his ankle while trying to escape the oncoming vehicle.

“The child was able to get into the nearby yard prior to the scooter being hit,” the police report states, describing how close the encounter came to becoming fatal.

After the scooter was crushed, authorities say White exited his vehicle, retrieved the damaged scooter from underneath the truck, and placed it inside the USPS vehicle.

Investigators say White then began driving away as the boy’s parents rushed outside, yelling at the child before leaving the scene.

“It’s a 10-year-old on a scooter, it’s not a normal porch pirate running up snatching packages that you just dropped off,” King told WEAR, underscoring how easily the situation could have been defused.

King noted that a brief conversation could have avoided the chaos altogether, calling the escalation unnecessary and dangerous.

“It’s amazing what a small conversation would do in a situation rather than jumping straight to force, use of force…or really escalating the situation way past where it should have been,” King added.

White was questioned by investigators several days later and taken into custody, according to Florida Highway Patrol officials.

He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, petit theft, and criminal mischief, charges that collectively carry serious potential penalties.

Authorities confirmed White was released on a $5,500 bond and is awaiting his next court appearance.

The U.S. Postal Service acknowledged the arrest in a statement while stressing cooperation with law enforcement.

“The U.S. Postal Service takes the safety and well-being of our customers and employees seriously,” USPS officials told the Pensacola News Journal. “The Postal Inspection Service, the law enforcement arm of the Postal Service, is actively investigating this issue in partnership with local law enforcement.”

“We can confirm that the individual has been employed [since] 2025. The Postal Service does not publicly comment on personnel matters.”

In suburban Atlanta, authorities are pursuing a far more deadly case after an Uber driver was found shot to death following a carjacking early New Year’s Day.

Police identified the victim as 58-year-old Cesar Tejada of Grayson, Georgia, who was working as an Uber driver when he was killed.

Officers responded around 5:20 a.m. Jan. 1 after receiving reports of a person lying in the roadway in Lawrenceville.

Tejada was discovered suffering from a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A Ring camera allegedly captured key moments of the crime, helping investigators piece together the timeline.

“At 4:13 a.m., Mr. Tejada went to pick up a customer on Rangewood Drive in Lilburn,” Lawrenceville Police Capt. Dena Pauly explained during a press conference.

“From there, Mr. Tejada drove the suspect to the 600 block of Groveland Parkway. That’s where the Ring camera shows the suspect exit the back seat, go to the front door … where Mr. Tejada was shot.”

Authorities say the suspect shot Tejada in the back, tossed him face down in the road, and fled in his SUV before returning briefly to the scene.

“When they arrived at the set destination, that young man not only took his life, he dumped him on the street as if he was disposing of something of no value,” Tejada’s wife wrote in a GoFundMe description.

Using FLOCK camera technology and working with Uber, detectives tracked the vehicle back to the pickup location, eventually detaining the suspect.

Police identified the suspect as 15-year-old Christian Simmons, who has been charged as an adult with murder.

Meanwhile in Michigan, a confrontation outside a home left a 75-year-old veteran in a coma after an alleged assault by a delivery driver.

Authorities say Lloyd Poole was struck outside his Wixom residene Dec. 28 after telling a DoorDash driver to slow down.

Investigators allege the driver, identified as 40-year-old Ryan Turner, exited his vehicle and punched Poole in the head, leaving him unconscious.

A neighbor’s security camera captured the attack, which led to emergency surgery that removed part of Poole’s skull to reduce brain swelling.

Wixom Police say Turner admitted to striking Poole and leaving him in the street, while claiming he acted in self-defense.

Turner is charged with aggravated assault, a misdemeanor carrying up to one year in jail, and has posted bond while awaiting court proceedings.

Court records show Turner has prior assault-related cases and multiple driving offenses, including driving with a suspended or invalid license.
