A former television journalist once known for her early morning broadcasts is now facing accusations of a brutal crime that has shaken her community.
Angelynn “Angie” Mock, 47, who used to be a news anchor at FOX 2 News in St. Louis, is accused of fatally stabbing her elderly mother inside their shared Kansas home.
Authorities in Wichita arrested Mock last week after responding to the residence she shared with her 80-year-old mother, Anita Avers.
Police said they arrived at the home around 7:50 a.m. to find Mock outside, visibly distressed and suffering from cuts to her hands.
In the home, officers found Avers lying in bed, unresponsive and covered in multiple stab wounds.
She was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.
According to reports from the Wichita Police Department, neighbors were horrified after seeing Mock come out of the house covered in blood.
One local resident, Alyssa Castro, recalled the disturbing scene as she and a friend were driving through the neighborhood that morning.
“There was a woman who approached our vehicle with blood all over her hands and body, asking us to call 911,” Castro told KAKE. “
I asked her if she was okay, and she was pretty shaken up and she seemed scared, and she just ran off.”
Castro said Mock grabbed her phone before running back inside the home, where she made a call to emergency dispatchers.
Audio obtained by local reporters captured dispatchers describing Mock’s statement, noting that “calling party stabbed the mother to save herself.”
Police took Mock into custody shortly afterward. She was treated for her injuries at a hospital and then booked into the Sedgwick County Jail, charged with first-degree murder. She remains held on a $1 million bond.
In a separate case across the country, another young man is accused of committing an equally horrific act against his mother.
Police in Connecticut say 20-year-old Sebastian Van Stockum beat his 55-year-old mother, Laura Williams, to death with a hammer inside their multimillion-dollar home in the upscale town of New Canaan.

Officers were dispatched to the residence around 10:36 p.m. last week after receiving a report of a man’s voice yelling “Mama” from the nearby woods.
As police were responding, another 911 call came in from a man who allegedly admitted, “I killed my mother,” and said he “did not want to live,” according to arrest records.
When officers arrived, they found Williams lying outside the home with severe head injuries and a cracked skull. A hammer, covered in blood, was discovered nearby in the grass.
Emergency responders attempted CPR, but Williams was declared dead at the scene due to the extent of her wounds.
A second area of pooled blood was found in the driveway, just a few feet from where her body was located, according to the police report.
Officers then approached the house, where Van Stockum opened the door wearing pajamas and a t-shirt soaked in blood. He did not appear to be armed and was taken into custody.
When police asked whether he had been involved, Van Stockum reportedly replied, “What does it look like?” He later added, “I did it” and “I took my mom’s life.”
Investigators said the 20-year-old then spoke quietly, saying he “tried using a knife, I tried using a hammer and I used my fists.”
Norwalk Judicial District State’s Attorney Paul Ferencek told the court Monday that “this was an especially violent murder. The victim was found bludgeoned to death with extreme trauma to their skull.”
Van Stockum was charged with murder and is being held on a $2 million bond.
His arraignment lasted only a few minutes. Court documents indicate he applied for a public defender and asked to see an optometrist to get glasses.
Farther south, a Mississippi teenager is also facing accusations of a shocking family killing that unfolded inside a small-town church.
Authorities say 17-year-old Jadynn Hamilton will be tried as an adult after allegedly admitting to beating his 73-year-old grandmother, Ollie Hamilton, to death.
According to Monroe County Sheriff Kevin Crook, deputies were dispatched to Smith Chapel Holiness Church in Athens last Wednesday evening after receiving a 911 call at 5:45 p.m.
Paramedics found the elderly woman dead inside the church. Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley later confirmed that she had been pronounced dead at the scene.
Crook told WTVA that deputies found key evidence near the church’s kitchen that pointed to the teenager.
Witnesses initially said a “young man” had gone for help following the attack. That individual turned out to be Jadynn Hamilton.
The sheriff told the Monroe Journal, “The longer that investigation went, evidence started pointing in a certain direction. A young man had supposedly gone for help early on after the attack. We ended up bringing him in last night, and he confessed to the crime.”
Crook said there was no immediate indication of a motive, and investigators confirmed that the teen had no prior criminal record.
Hamilton has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder and remains held on a $500,000 bond as he awaits further court proceedings.
