Authorities say 38-year-old Joshua Ragan is facing an array of serious charges following a violent episode that unfolded Monday afternoon in Davenport, Illinois.

Law enforcement responded to a 911 call about a domestic incident around 1:45 p.m.

When officers arrived on scene, they discovered a 71-year-old man in the basement suffering from multiple injuries, including blunt force trauma and deep cuts to his head and body.

The victim, who was not publicly named, reportedly told officers that his grandson had launched the attack by striking him in the back of the head.

He was then shoved to the ground, where Ragan allegedly continued beating him with golf clubs across his body and head.

An arrest affidavit obtained by local affiliates reveals even more chilling details.

Ragan allegedly sprayed wasp repellent “into the victim’s wounds while he was injured on the floor of the basement, telling the victim he was going to kill him and threatening to (electrocute) him.”

Ragan is also accused of disabling his grandfather’s phone, effectively cutting him off from calling for emergency assistance.

Authorities also allege that the suspect accessed and took possession of three firearms from inside the home during the attack.

Following his arrest, Ragan allegedly confessed to both striking his grandfather with golf clubs and spraying him with wasp repellent. However, no motive has been officially disclosed by investigators.

The elderly victim was rushed to the hospital where he was treated for injuries to his face, ribs, and wrist. He also required stitches to close up a head laceration.

According to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Ragan has been charged with assault while participating in a felony, three separate counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and willful injury, which are all felony offenses.

He also faces misdemeanor allegations of assault with intent, false imprisonment, and assault against an elderly individual. His bond was set at $25,000, and he remains in custody.

A preliminary hearing for Ragan is set to take place on August 8 in Scott County Court.

According to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, Jailen Lupton faces charges of murder and second-degree burglary.

Deputies say the violence unfolded over the weekend at a residence in Irvington.

Responding to reports of a medical emergency, deputies arrived at the scene to find 70-year-old Diane Trest lying unresponsive in the front yard, suffering from severe head trauma.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. A mallet was found close to where the crime occurred.

Witnesses provided accounts of the aftermath, alleging that Lupton had approached neighbors to confess.

Surveillance footage from that home shows the suspect walking up to the porch.

Neighbor Cheryl Edwards recalled the moment vividly. “She’s coming up the porch,” Edwards told WKRG.

“What are you doing,” Edwards asked, confronting the teen on her doorstep.

“I just killed my grandma,” Lupton allegedly replied, before attempting to force her way into Edwards’ house.

A physical struggle reportedly broke out on the porch, and Edwards fought off the suspect with a mop, until she left.

Despite being repelled, Lupton allegedly returned shortly afterward, according to the security video.

She reportedly yelled for help and tried to push open the front door again.

When she was unable to get in, she allegedly rammed her shoulder into the door, eventually forcing her way inside.

Investigators believe Lupton may have been attempting to steal the neighbor’s car keys.

Edwards later emerged from the house, shouting for help and fleeing down her front steps. A responding deputy arrived shortly after.

According to Edwards, Trest had confided in her multiple times about family struggles and troubling behavior from her relatives.

“There’s always been issues next door. Ever since I’ve lived here, the cops have always been there,” she said.

“We chatted across the fence. I mean, she told me about her children, her sons, and her daughters, and her grandchildren. And she said, ‘they’re troubled.'”

Edwards also recalled the condition Trest was often in. “She’d come over; she’d have cuts on her, bruises. I mean, she’d say the dogs did it. I’d say, ‘Diane, that’s not from the dogs.’ We kept telling her, ‘they’re gonna kill you one day. They’re gonna drug you or kill you.'”

Describing the aftermath of the attack, Edwards said, “The rubber mallet was laying right there, and her face was just obliterated. This is senseless.”

“How can somebody do this to your grandparent that has raised you practically your entire life?” she questioned.

Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch confirmed that drugs were found at the residence.

He suggested methamphetamine may have played a role in the disturbing behavior.

“Typically, meth is what causes the paranoia, which, when she was running, she told neighbors that someone was chasing her – when there was no one, you know, anywhere around her,” Burch said.
